Summary

Lingua Franca (LF) is a contact vernacular used for interethnic communication in the Mediterranean area until the 19th century, with a Romance linguistic basis. The syntactic structures of LF are continuous with and represent a subset of those of its Romance lexifiers, as shown in the Dictionnaire de la langue franque (1830). Despite its Romance basis, LF has received little attention from Romanists, with most studies focusing on its lexicon, which is estimated to be 58% Italo-Romance, 27% inter-Romance hybrids, and 6% Spanish. The language's syntactic structures are similar to those of its Romance lexifiers, with some scholars categorizing it as a koiné or the product of dialect convergence.
