Summary

No finite-state Markov process can serve as an English grammar, and statistical approximations to English do not improve with increasing complexity. Phrase structure gives a more powerful method for describing language, but is only successful for a small subset of simple sentences. Transformational grammars are processes of the same type as phrase-structure grammars and can simplify the grammar of English by limiting phrase structure description to a kernel of simple sentences.
