Summary

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language, describing and analyzing facts, as well as the ability of individuals to communicate and express themselves. It examines the relationship between language and various aspects of human life, behavior, and activity, and is closely related to other human sciences. Modern linguistic studies began with the idea that a text is a self-contained, closed structure that can be analyzed to reveal its meaning. Language can be analyzed on five levels: phonetic, morphological, lexical, syntactic, and semantic. The modern linguistic theory, largely attributed to Ferdinand de Saussure, views language as a system of signs, where each sign consists of a sound image and a concept. The signifier (sound image) and the signified (concept) are closely related, and the meaning of a word is determined by its relationship to other words within the language system. Saussure's theory emphasizes the importance of understanding the relationship between the signifier and the signified, and how language is used to convey meaning. Other key concepts in linguistic theory include the distinction between language and speech, where language is a system of rules and speech is the individual's use of that system.
