Adult learning theories provide insight into how adults learn, and can help instructors be more effective in their practice and more responsive to the needs of the learners they serve. Three major theories are andragogy, self-directed learning, and transformational learning. Andragogy, developed by Malcolm Knowles, assumes that adult learners are self-directed, draw on life experiences, and are problem-centered. Self-directed learning (SDL) involves individuals taking responsibility for their own learning process, and approximately 70% of adult learning is self-directed. Transformational learning (TL) involves a shift in consciousness and can be emancipating, as described by Paolo Freire, or a rational process, as described by Mezirow. These theories have implications for practice, including setting a cooperative climate, assessing learner needs, and fostering self-directed learning.
