The Australian Media Literacy Alliance (AMLA) has developed a national strategy for media literacy, drawing on a national survey and consultation process involving 121 people from 89 organizations. Media literacy is defined as the ability to critically engage with media in all aspects of life, with a framework underpinned by six key concepts and questions. The consultation revealed a strong agreement on the urgent need to prioritize media literacy for all Australians to address challenges such as misinformation, threats to democracy, and media illiteracy. Priority groups with lower levels of media literacy include low-income households, people with low education, those with disabilities, regional Australians, older Australians, Indigenous Australians, and culturally diverse Australians. The report emphasizes the need for community-based media literacy programs, government support for regulation, and responsible media practice. Media literacy should be considered a lifelong process, receiving attention and support throughout life stages, and basic literacy skills are essential for developing media literacy skills.
