A study by Ithaka S+R, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, aimed to determine the true costs of publishing scholarly monographs. The study gathered data from 20 participating presses, analyzing 382 titles published in Fiscal 2014, and estimated costs including staff time, direct expenses, and press-level overheads. The study developed three cost definitions: BASIC, FULL COST, and FULL COST PLUS, and found that the costs of publishing a monograph range from $15,140 to $129,909 per title, with the average cost being higher than often reported or suggested by current Open Access models.
