The Myth of the Given refers to the idea that knowledge can be acquired without drawing on capacities required for cognition, making it incoherent. According to Sellars, knowledge attributions place episodes or states "in the logical space of reasons," requiring capacities that belong to reason. Perceptual knowledge involves sensibility, but also requires rational faculties to be operative, avoiding the Myth. Conceptual capacities, belonging to the faculty of reason, must be in play in experience to make knowledge available. Experience itself, not just judgments in response to experience, must involve rational capacities to avoid the Myth.
