Summary

The neuromuscular junction is formed by the connection between a motor neuron and a skeletal muscle fiber, also known as the myoneural junction. The nerve fiber loses its myelin sheath and terminates near the muscle fiber membrane, with terminal branches forming synaptic knobs that contain synaptic vesicles with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (Ach). The synaptic cleft between the two membranes is filled with extracellular fluid, and the motor end plate of the muscle membrane has folds that increase the surface area and contain Ach receptors and voltage-gated Na+ channels. When an action potential arrives at the axon terminal, voltage-gated Ca++ channels open, allowing Ca++ influx, and Ach vesicles are released through exocytosis.
