The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) differ from prior standards in three ways:
1) Performance: NGSS states what students should be able to do to demonstrate meeting the standard,
2) Foundations: Each performance expectation incorporates science/engineering practices, core disciplinary ideas, and crosscutting concepts,
3) Coherence: Performance expectations list connections to other ideas within science/engineering and Common Core State Standards.
Performance expectations are assessable statements of what students should know and be able to do, and all students are expected to achieve proficiency with respect to all performance expectations.
The NGSS performance expectations provide a foundation for rigorous advanced courses and should not limit the curriculum, and are not a set of instructional or assessment tasks, but rather statements of what students should be able to do after instruction.
