Summary

Misinformation has become a major societal challenge, with the 2016 US elections, Brexit, and the COVID-19 pandemic highlighting its impact. Research suggests that cognitive sophistication affects people's ability to fall for misleading content, but findings are mixed, with some studies indicating that more sophisticated agents are less likely to fall for misinformation, while others show that they are more likely to disagree over objective facts. A new model reconciles these findings, showing that sophisticated agents can be more likely to fall for misinformation in the presence of deliberate misinformation, as they develop a form of endogenous stubbornness that stops them from learning. In contrast, naive agents, who simply aggregate information without much deliberation, can outperform sophisticated agents in such environments. The model helps explain several experimental and empirical facts from cognitive science, psychology, and the social sciences, and has implications for policy decisions aimed at containing the spread of misinformation.
