Community traumatic events like mass shootings can disrupt student learning, reducing instructional time and causing teacher and student absences. The 2002 "Beltway Sniper" attacks in Virginia are used as a natural experiment to study the effects on student achievement. The results show that schools within five miles of an attack had significantly reduced proficiency rates, with the most robust effects found in math proficiency rates for third and fifth grades, and third-grade reading proficiency. The decline in school proficiency rates was around five to nine percentage points, with the effects driven by achievement declines in schools serving higher proportions of racial minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. However, the deleterious effects faded out in subsequent years.
