Summary

Participative methods for community action are based on the belief that people are best placed to know their problems and develop solutions with the right support. Workers should tap into local knowledge and capacity for change, rather than imposing external culture and values, which can disempower communities. Genuine participation is rare, and often what is described as participation is simply information giving or consultation with limited options. Youth and community workers often find themselves trying to develop local participation in pre-decided issues, which can lead to burnout and communities feeling apathetic. An alternative approach is needed, where workers help communities focus on issues that concern them and that they can do something about. The worker's role is complex and multifaceted, requiring a commitment to social justice, critical consciousness, and collective action, and intentionally seeking to encourage sustainable social change through critical reflection and collective action.
