Summary

Psych verbs and control into subject clauses in German are examined, focusing on three scenarios: simple sentences with object experiencer (OE) verbs and infinitival subjects (Scenario A), complex sentences with embedded OE verbs and non-extraposed infinitival subjects (Scenario B), and complex sentences with embedded OE verbs and extraposed infinitival subjects (Scenario C). The claims are: (i) control in subject clauses of OE verbs in simple sentences involves obligatory control (OC), (ii) control in subject clauses of OE verbs in embedded clauses involves non-obligatory control (NOC), and (iii) extraposition does not affect these data in German, contrary to previous claims. The goal is to present German data supporting these claims, link the observations, and sketch a tentative analysis. Simple sentences with non-psych verbs and infinitival subjects display NOC, whereas psych verbs, specifically Class II verbs, exhibit OC. The contrast between psych verbs and non-psych verbs is highlighted, and the role of embedding and extraposition is discussed.
