Summary

The health of mothers and children was once a domestic concern, but with the advent of scientific medicine, discoveries in bacteriology, and sanitary reforms, childbirth came under greater medical scrutiny. The establishment of pediatric hospitals, a greater focus on maternal nutrition, and improved social and living conditions led to dramatic decreases in infant mortality rates. The Children's Bureau was established in 1912, and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) was established in 1935 to address the health needs of mothers and children. Despite successes in reducing maternal and infant mortality, disparities in outcomes persisted, and the number of children reported as being disabled due to a chronic health problem increased from 2% in 1960 to over 8% in 2011. In the late 1980s, research findings from the life course health sciences highlighted the importance of early life on long-term health outcomes.
