Summary

Researchers investigated sensitivity to fine-grained phonetic details in childhood, comparing first- and second-language learners. They found that English-speaking monolingual toddlers are sensitive to mispronunciations and coarticulatory shading, similar to native-English adults. The study explored children's sensitivity to variations in vowel nasalization, comparing L2 learners and L1 listeners. English-speaking five-year-olds and native French-speaking age-matched listeners were tested, and the results showed that children display gradient or categorical patterns of recognition when presented with variable word forms in their L1 and an L2. The study used a word learning task followed by a word recognition task with stimuli containing the French oral-nasal contrast for vowels, which is absent from English.
