Course: RED 425 - Designing Livable Communities (Section 51656R)
Instructor: Matt Macher
The course explores theories and concepts of livable communities and good city form, using case studies, field visits, and collaborative design projects to help students understand the impact of physical form and space on livability and community.
Three central questions guide the course:
1. What characterizes a livable community and how may these qualities evolve?
2. What responsibilities do community builders have towards realizing livability and community identity?
3. What physical tools and strategies can designers use to create livable communities?
Course objectives include introducing students to fundamental issues impacting community livability, cultivating critical thinking skills, and developing written, verbal, graphic, and analytical skills.
Attendance and participation are essential, with more than one absence making it difficult to succeed in the course.
Classroom conduct rules include being on time, silencing devices, and respecting others' opinions.
Laptop use is allowed only at specific times, and students are expected to use class time wisely to prepare required coursework.
