Summary

Researchers propose a methodology to derive verb valence information from corpora using subcorpora of typical sentences, which are constructed in a language-independent manner based on frequent POS structures. By inspecting typical sentences with a fixed verb, valence information can be directly identified. Verb fingerprints, consisting of the most typical sentence patterns a verb appears in, are used to extract valence properties and compare them against a language's valence profile. This approach allows for the construction of verb valence pairs for bilingual dictionaries, as demonstrated with the Norwegian valence dictionary NorVal and comparable patterns in German.
