Summary

Artificial intelligence is a part of daily life, yet there's a cultural lack of understanding about its realities, with people fearing a robotic revolution. Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, introduced in 1942, have dominated popular understanding of AI, with the laws being: 1) a robot may not injure a human, 2) a robot must obey human orders, and 3) a robot must protect its own existence. Asimov's laws were created to allay fears of technology by showing how rational logic can overcome problems, but they are flawed and ambiguous, revealing more about society than providing answers to AI problems. Despite this, Asimov's laws continue to shape the future of AI, with many calling for their institution in AI development, and can provide a basis for thinking about and developing guidelines for AI research and legislation.
