Objective: To understand the significance of Pentecost and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Materials:

Copies of the Bible or the readings
Roll of paper, magazines, scissors, glue, markers, and other craft materials
Computer and projector (optional)

Lesson Plan:

1. Introduction (5 minutes): Explain that today is a special day in the church, known as Pentecost or the Church's birthday.
2. Opening Prayer (2 minutes): Collect Of the Holy Spirit (Book of Common Prayer, page 251)
3. The Story (15 minutes): Read Acts 2:1-21 and John 20:19-23. Use creative resources such as the Brick Bible or a YouTube video to help tell the story.
4. Questions (10 minutes):
What was it like to be a disciple that day?
What would it have been like to speak another language suddenly?
What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
How do we hear God speak to us today?
5. Activity (20 minutes): Brainstorm with the children the gifts and abilities they have that might have been given to them by the Holy Spirit. Create a Holy Spirit Mural using the roll of paper, magazines, markers, and other craft materials.
6. Drama Option (15 minutes): Invite the children to rewrite the story as if it were happening today.
7. Getting Closure (5 minutes): Invite the children to share their part of the mural with the group.
8. Closing Prayer (2 minutes): Collect for Pentecost (Book of Common Prayer)

Pentecost is the day the Holy Spirit came to the disciples.
The Holy Spirit gives us gifts and abilities to help do God's work.
We are all made in God's image and bring varied gifts to the community.
* The Holy Spirit is still with us today, guiding and empowering us.
