Summary

Paradigm generics communicate strong generalizations, but some generics appear to express weak generalizations, such as "Mosquitoes carry the West Nile virus" or "Sharks attack bathers", which are intuitively true despite only a small minority of the kind being true. Theorists have proposed various solutions, including treating these sentences as ambiguous with a generic capacity reading, but this proposal has objections, such as capacity readings being normally only available with eventive predicates. The author argues that our intuitions about these weak generics are mistaken and that a theory of generics should not predict that they are true, motivating an error theory to deal with such cases.
