Summary

The BG/NBD model can be used to compute P(alive) as the probability that a customer with purchase history (x, tx, T) is alive at time T. The expression for P(alive) is derived using Bayes' theorem and the BG/NBD likelihood function. For a customer who made no purchases, P(alive) = 1, which may be seen as a shortcoming of the model. Two variants of the model are proposed to overcome this issue: one relaxes the assumption that all customers are alive at the beginning of the observation period, and the other assumes a "death coin" flip at time 0. The expressions for P(alive) under these variants are also derived.
