Summary

The development industry needs to change to bring about sustainable differences to people's lives. Three areas for improvement are: 1) localisation, which involves people-centred and acclimatised approaches to development; 2) empowering partnerships with the private and civil sectors and international development organisations, which requires interdependence and space for constituents' own focus; and 3) education for and in development, which should prioritise sustainable education over temporarily funded interventions. Case studies from SIDA, UNICEF, and Save the Children highlight the need for improvement in these areas, including SIDA's limited influence in the DRC due to prioritising its own needs over those of the country and lacking direct engagement with constituents.
