The readySTEMgo project aims to reduce dropout rates in STEM programs by identifying key predictors of study success, developing a diagnostic test to identify at-risk students, and constructing an effective intervention tool. Research suggests that prior math achievement and quantitative skills are the most consistent predictors of STEM study success, while prior verbal achievement has differential effects on different outcome measures. Motivational factors, such as self-efficacy beliefs and academic self-concept, also play a significant role in predicting academic achievement. Higher math, physics, and chemistry grades at the end of secondary school are necessary but not sufficient conditions for persisting in a STEM field of study.
