Summary

This study examines translation problems in popular science articles, investigating methods used to deal with these problems and their ability to produce adequate translations. A corpus of five articles from Scientific American and its Arabic version is analyzed using Hervey and Higgins' (1992) model, which assesses translation loss on five textual levels: genre, cultural, semantic, formal, and varietal. The study identifies several translation problems, with translation loss mainly on semantic and formal levels, and evaluates the success of methods used to produce adequate translations.
