Summary

41.6% of CSU students reported food insecurity, with 20% experiencing low food security and 21.6% very low food security, exceeding national prevalence rates. 10.9% of students reported experiencing homelessness. Students who reported food insecurity, homelessness, or both experienced physical and mental health consequences, lower academic achievement, and higher rates of "inactive days." Black/African-American and first-generation college students experienced the highest rates of food insecurity (65.9%) and homelessness (18%). Recommendations include developing affordable housing and food options, targeted strategies for high-risk populations, longitudinal research, and incorporating trauma-informed staff and campus culture awareness campaigns to support students with unmet basic needs.
