Summary

Scarcity often leads to decisions favoring the present over the future, attributed to myopic, impulsive decision making. However, five studies support an alternative perspective, suggesting that people's decisions under scarcity reflect attempts to address threatened needs, with the time horizon of these needs moderating intertemporal choices. Data from 10,297 participants show that time horizon influences decisions under scarcity, with preferences for sooner outcomes increasing when needs have shorter time horizons and decreasing when needs have longer time horizons. The findings suggest that decision making under scarcity is less thoughtless than presumed and underscore the importance of understanding contextual variation in experiences of scarcity.
