Summary

French liaison is a phenomenon where words have two phonological forms: a longer liaison form used in specific syntactic and/or prosodic contexts before vowel-initial words, and a shorter non-liaison form used elsewhere. This phenomenon is not strictly phonological, but rather a shape alternation based on phonological properties of the context, and it interacts with inflection, particularly in masculine singular adjectives, blurring the boundary between shape component and inflection proper. Liaison occurs in approximately 40% of French word forms, across various parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, determiners, conjunctions, and pronouns.
