The Altaic origin of Japanese is a disputed question in language history, with some arguing that there is no basic vocabulary relating Japanese to Korean and Altaic. This paper investigates this postulation, evaluating etymological proposals made relating Japanese basic vocabulary items to Korean and Altaic. Out of 92 basic vocabulary items from the Swadesh 100 list, 41 etymologies meet the selection criteria, suggesting that similarities between Japanese, Korean, and Altaic are more likely due to common genetic inheritance than borrowing. The paper argues that the concept of basic vocabulary is a probabilistic matter, with low borrowability and high resistance to replacement, but not a conditio sine qua non for demonstrating common ancestorship.
