Course description: Methods to create expressiveness in physical and virtual agents, anthropomorphism, interactivity, intent, intelligence, affect, emotion, personality, and uncanny valley effect.
Course objectives: Define notions of expressiveness, compare and contrast constraints and affordances, discuss literature, design and implement an expressive intelligent agent.
Required textbooks: Affective Computing, Designing Sociable Robots, instructor-curated articles and book chapters.
Course schedule: Weeks 0-15, topics include expressiveness, physical vs virtual, intent, anthropomorphism, non-verbal and verbal expressiveness, affect and emotion, style, personality, and project presentations.
Evaluation of grades: Homework (40%), research presentation (15%), group project (40%), pop-up assignments (5%).
Grading policy: A (93.4-100%), A- (90-93.3%), B+ (86.7-89.9%), B (83.4-86.6%), B- (80-83.3%), C+ (76.7-79.9%), C (73.4-76.6%), C- (70-73.3%), D+ (66.7-69.9%), D (63.4-66.6%), D- (60-63.3%), E (0-59.9%).
