Summary

Statistical linguistics assumes differences in frequency of units in texts, but determining "important" differences is a problem. Homogeneity, defined as similarity of parts of a whole, is crucial. Statistical tests can evaluate results, but the decision to count and evaluate depends on the feature, genre, and significance level. Language statistics show similarities in frequencies between samples from the same writer, different writers, and languages. The problem is ordering degrees of similarity into groups according to homogeneity. A study of syntactic units in technical English aims to examine statistical behavior and propose dimensions responsible for observed differences.
