Summary

Vanessa Tabry's Master of Arts thesis, "Attentional Modulation of Thermal Pain during a Working Memory Task," examines how attentional resources are allocated between pain processing and cognitive task engagement. The study found that participants reported lower pain during a challenging task than a control task, and that pain stimuli did not significantly impact task performance. However, trial-by-trial analyses revealed that reported pain explained the interruptive effect of pain stimulus on task performance, and task performance counteracted the analgesic effect of task difficulty. The results suggest that individual differences in attention allocation, threat sensitivity, and executive functions can influence pain modulation, supporting a limited resource model of attention.
