Summary

The construction of a Basque Dependency Treebank is presented, a necessary resource for linguistic research and NLP applications. The treebank is part of a project to build annotated corpora with syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic levels. The Eus3LB corpus, containing 50,000 words of standard written Basque, is annotated using a dependency-based formalism. A syntactic tagging system is defined, adopting the framework presented in Carroll et al. (1998, 1999) with modifications to accommodate Basque syntax. The tag set describes grammatical structures such as relative clauses, causative sentences, and coordination. A hierarchy of grammatical relations is established, distinguishing between structurally case-marked complements, modifiers, negation, linking-words, auxiliaries, and semantic relations. The annotation process involves multiple linguists and a computational tool, ESALT, to facilitate manual tagging and ensure syntactic correctness. Currently, 50% of the corpus has been analyzed, and the remaining tagging is expected to be completed with the help of ESALT.
