Es folgten Experimente wie der elektrostatisch-kapazitive Tonabnehmer von Lloyd Loar (1923), Piezoelemente von Lester Polfus und Kohlekörner-Mikros, die jedoch zu viele Störgeräusche verursachten. Wichtige Entwicklungen waren der elektromagnetische Pickup von Rowe/DeArmond und die erste serienmäßige E-Gitarre aus Aluminium (Rickenbacker A22/A25), bekannt als "Frying Pan", von Beauchamp/Barth im Jahr 1931.
