Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a program designed to support children aged 5 or about to turn 5 who lack access to high-quality early learning experiences. It provides no-cost education, staffed by certified educators and integrated into schools with meals, transportation, and recess. As of January 2023, over 3,000 students were enrolled in TK across Washington's 101 school districts.

TK often operates alongside Head Start and the Early Childhood Education Assistance Program (ECEAP) to serve preschool-age children based on need. In Washington, kindergarten readiness is assessed using the WaKIDS process, which evaluates six domains: Cognitive, Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Physical, and Social-Emotional. Readiness in these areas predicts success in third-grade assessments.

In fall 2022, former TK students outperformed their peers on the WaKIDS assessment across all domains, particularly benefiting certain student groups. Data from this period showed that former TK students had higher readiness scores compared to those who did not participate in TK, highlighting TK's role in closing opportunity gaps.

Specifically, former TK students demonstrated significantly better performance in Social-Emotional, Physical, Language, Cognitive, Literacy, and Mathematics domains than their non-TK peers. This was especially true for students with disabilities and low-income students, where the gap in readiness scores between TK and non-TK participants was notable.

Overall, participation in TK provides a strong foundation for kindergarten success, particularly for vulnerable student groups, by enhancing readiness across multiple developmental areas.
