Summary

Recent empirical evidence suggests that meritocratic ideals are mainly a Western phenomenon, with the Chinese people not differentiating between merit- and luck-based inequalities despite their rich historical legacy of meritocratic institutions. This study proposes that this phenomenon might be due to the Chinese public's greater adherence to the status quo. An incentivized redistribution experiment was conducted with elite university students in China and France, varying the initial split of payoffs between two real-life workers to redistribute from. The results show that Chinese respondents consistently choose more non-redistribution (playing the status quo) across both highly unequal and relatively equal status quo scenarios than French respondents. However, Chinese respondents who deviate from the status quo do differentiate between merit- and luck-based inequalities and do not redistribute less than French respondents. The study attributes this phenomenon to low political agency rather than apathy, inattention, or libertarian beliefs among the Chinese.
