Summary

The British economy is not supply constrained, contrary to the views of productivity pessimists. The output gap is not as large as thought, and employment and productivity have been affected by the crisis. Real wages have played a role in the crisis, and other evidence of capacity constraints includes crisis event studies, business surveys, and the persistence of inflation. Britain's recovery has been disappointing, and demand and supply issues are to blame. Capacity and the output gap are still concerns, and employment and productivity gaps persist. Average hours worked and other threats to productivity, such as the contraction of banking and inefficient allocation of financial capital, are also issues.
