The Early Reading Policy at Kestrel House School aims for learners to develop a positive relationship with reading, achieve reading levels in line with their developmental progress, and ensure listening skills and functional communication play a key role in phonics lessons. The policy is implemented through three curriculum phases: Expose, Explore, and Enquire, each providing access to Sensory Stories, Phonics learning experiences, Universal SaLT approaches, and AAC resources. Learners will have daily access to 1:1 support, small group literacy lessons, and modelled reading. The school uses quality, age-appropriate stories and materials to teach reading, considering developmentally appropriate reading, enticing learners into reading, and functional reading for understanding and communication. Parents/carers are encouraged to support reading at home through Progress Meetings, Annual Reviews, and access to universal SaLT provision and resources. The school offers a language-rich curriculum, immersing pupils in high-quality vocabulary, and provides daily reading opportunities, choices, and individualised support.
