Summary

A study at a medium-sized Canadian university surveyed 1,142 students and 130 faculty members about their perceptions of and experiences with academic dishonesty. The results showed that most students viewed academic honesty as important and reported not engaging in academic dishonesty, despite 45.8% witnessing others doing so. Students were more likely to witness cheating as their postsecondary experience increased, and witnessing varied across disciplines and educational attainment. Faculty members were split on whether incidents of academic dishonesty were increasing. The study aimed to understand academic integrity in Canada, where research is limited, and to inform evidence-based approaches to maintaining academic integrity at the university.
