The new curriculum was introduced in schools in September 2014, but for Year 2 and Year 6, it won't be statutory until September 2015. English, Maths, and Science are core subjects, while foundation subjects like Art, Computing, and History have more flexible curricula. The new curriculum has higher expectations, with a greater focus on arithmetic, fractions, and grammar. Children in Year 2 and Year 6 will take National Curriculum Tests in Reading, Mathematics, and Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling, with results reported as scaled scores from 2016. In Year 5, children will study more complex math problems, including fractions and decimals, and will be expected to know their times tables up to 12x12. In English, children will meet a wider range of texts and types of writing, and will be encouraged to use their skills in a broader range of contexts.
