Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back to the Spring 1 term. I hope you have all enjoyed the
well-deserved break over Christmas and the New Year, and you are
ready to see all of the hard work your child will achieve in 2019.

I am very much looking forward to this half term as we have lots of
exciting things planned and some small changes within the classroom
to challenge children’s understanding and create a more ‘hands-on’
environment for their learning.

available at 8.45am and 3.00pm.

Homework focus for this half term
is reading, spellings and weekly
homework tasks. Your child will be
sent home with a reading book and it
will be their responsibility to read
daily. New spellings will be given out
on a Friday and tested on a
Thursday. Please ensure your
children practice their spellings at
home and do not bring in their
spelling files until the day of their
test. If necessary, they may be re-
tested on the following week. Times
tables will be tested weekly in class
and children are encouraged to
participate in tasks on the Times
Table Rockstars Website.

Y5 P.E. sessions will be every
Friday morning this half term
as we are going swimming.
Children will need their full
swimming kit to participate.
All jewellery must be removed,
and long hair tied back. Please
ensure your children come to
school in their full school
uniform and not their P.E.
kit.
This half term Y5 will be covering the
following topics:

Maths – place value (roman numerals),
addition and subtraction including
problems, mental and written
multiplications, measures (length, mass
and capacity) and geometry (reflection,
translation and angles).

English – poetry to entertain, newspaper
reports, informational texts, persuasive
posters and letters, fictional recounts
and adventure stories.

Science – Will we ever send another
human to the moon? We will be
investigating the solar systems, planets
and learning all about Neil Armstrong!

Geography – Why is Brazil in the news
again? We will be learning all about
Brazil and the Brazilian culture/arts!
