Summary

Researchers used Descriptive Experience Sampling to study the inner experience of 16 college students while reading short stories by Fitzgerald and Hemingway. They found that visual imagery was frequent, but inner narration of the text occurred in only about 3% of samples. Words were experienced in about 25% of samples, including focus on specific words, innerly spoken words related to the text, and unrelated words. The study suggests that presuppositions may lead to overestimation of silent speech frequency and discusses the impact on understanding reading and consciousness science.
