A six-step process for developing IEPs aligned with state academic grade-level content standards is outlined. The steps include:
1. Learning about the grade-level academic content standards for the child's grade and considering factors related to the child's disability.
2. Developing the Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP) by describing the child's strengths and needs.
3. Determining the most appropriate assessment options to measure progress.
4. Identifying accommodations, modifications, and/or assistive technology needed to access and progress in the general education curriculum.
5. Assessing and reporting the student's progress throughout the year.
6. Developing measurable annual goals with the academic standards in mind, including functional, behavioral, and/or transition goals as needed.
Guiding questions are provided for each step to help the IEP team make informed decisions based on data and ensure the IEP addresses all the child's educational needs related to their disability.
