The Nagano Prefectural Mountain Climbing Center conducted a survey on the trends of group mountain climbing among middle schools in Nagano Prefecture in 2013. The survey was sent to 216 schools, including national, public, and private middle schools, as well as special support schools. The response rate was 100%, with 196 schools responding, excluding special support schools.

The survey found that:

87% of schools (170 schools) had plans to go mountain climbing, with 37 schools changing their plans due to various reasons such as reducing the burden on students, shortening the climbing time, and increasing safety.
The most popular mountains for climbing were Sulphur Mountain (37 schools), Norikura Mountain (33 schools), and Tangon Mountain (26 schools).
96% of schools (164 schools) had external attendants, including guides, nurses, and doctors, with 81% of schools (137 schools) hiring guides or attendants.
The most common equipment brought by schools included first-aid kits, taping tape, portable oxygen, and transceivers.
2% of students (334 students) were unable to complete the planned climb due to reasons such as sudden illness, injury, or poor physical condition.
Schools took various measures to prepare for the climb, including creating climbing guides, conducting preliminary climbs, and holding explanatory meetings for parents.

The survey also compared the results with previous surveys, showing that the number of schools hiring guides or attendants has increased, and the types of equipment brought by schools have changed over time.
