European Aluminium welcomes the recognition of Aluminium manufacturing as an enabling climate mitigation activity in the EU Taxonomy Regulation, but expresses strong concerns regarding the approach chosen for the eligibility of aluminium primary production. The proposed solution, making the current ETS benchmark a compulsory criterion, is opposed due to its potential to not stimulate the right investments and have the opposite effect of the proposed taxonomy. The methodology for updating ETS benchmarks is also criticized for not guaranteeing that benchmarks reflect the performance of the 10% more efficient installations, and for risking a situation where no installation can satisfy the taxonomy's criteria. Additionally, the time-frame and approach for investments to meet the proposed criteria are considered unrealistic, and the exclusion of incineration with energy recovery and pyrolysis pre-treatment process from the taxonomy is seen as penalizing investments in bottom ash treatment technologies vital for recycling aluminium.
