The NIH Acting Principal Deputy Director responded to Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers' letter regarding the reappointment of Institute and Center Directors at the National Institutes of Health. The 21st Century Cures Act requires IC Directors to undergo a 5-year review, and upon a favorable review, they are reappointed for another 5-year term. The NIH provided a table with the review and reappointment dates for current IC Directors. In a separate letter, the Assistant Secretary for Legislation explained the appointment and reappointment process for NIH IC Directors, which involves a nationwide search, approval by the HHS Secretary, and a 5-year review process that assesses scientific leadership, interaction with the scientific community, and administration of the IC. IC Directors do not receive pay increases as a result of the 5-year review process, but are eligible for pay increases through the annual rating process established under the HHS Senior Executive Service Performance Management System.
