Myanmar's military seized control on February 1, 2021, after a general election, and has since targeted doctors and health workers participating in the Civil Disobedience Movement. Between February 1 and September 30, 2021, there were 297 reported incidents of violence against health care, including 210 health workers arrested, 87 hospital raids, 56 military occupations of hospitals, 40 health workers injured, and 29 health workers killed. The violence has severely impacted access to health care, with widespread interruptions to health care training, confiscation of health supplies, and blockage of transport routes. Health workers face restrictions, patients are blocked from accessing health care, and state and non-state actors use explosive weapons near health care facilities. Notable incidents include the arrest of an elderly pro-democracy activist at a COVID-19 vaccination center, the death of a surgeon and lecturer from COVID-19 after timely medical care was withheld, and the arrest and killing of health workers providing care to those injured during protests.
