Summary

State of Connecticut's Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities defines sexual harassment as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or conduct of a sexual nature that affects employment or creates a hostile work environment. It can occur anywhere, including off-site work events or through social media, and can be committed by anyone in the workplace. Examples include being offered a job or promotion in exchange for sexual favors (quid pro quo) or being subjected to a hostile work environment with repeated inappropriate comments or advances. If harassed, individuals can take steps such as asking the harasser to stop, reporting to a supervisor or HR, or filing a complaint with the CHRO or EEOC. Remedies for victims of sexual harassment may include back pay, front pay, attorney's fees, and emotional distress damages.
