Summary

Brazil submitted a Technical Annex to its Third Biennial Update Report, presenting results achieved from reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation in the Cerrado biome from 2011 to 2017, for results-based payments under the UNFCCC's REDD+ program. The Cerrado biome, covering approximately 2,036,448 km², is Brazil's second-largest biome. Brazil developed a Forest Reference Emission Level (FREL) for the Cerrado biome, which was technically assessed and published in 2017. The FREL Cerrado estimates emissions from deforestation by combining activity data and emission factors, using guidelines from the IPCC Good Practice Guidance for Land Use, Land-use Change and Forestry. The submission aims to obtain results-based payments for Brazil's REDD+ actions, without modifying its Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions or Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement.
