Summary

Twelve States executed 59 prisoners during 2004, 6 fewer than in 2003. Those executed had been under sentence of death for an average of 11 years. At yearend 2004, 3,314 prisoners were under sentence of death, with California holding the largest number (637). Thirty-three people were under a Federal death sentence. In 2004, 59 men were executed, including 36 whites, 19 blacks, 3 Hispanics, and 1 Asian, with 58 executed by lethal injection and 1 by electrocution. From 1977 to 2004, 944 inmates were executed, with two-thirds occurring in 5 States: Texas, Virginia, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Florida. The number of executions decreased to 59 in 2004, the lowest since 1996. The number of States authorizing lethal injection increased from 27 in 1994 to 37 in 2004, with 98% of executions in 2004 carried out by lethal injection.
