Despite strict domestic legislation, the species continues to be heavily poached, with at least 34,080 live individuals seized between 2000 and 2015. Habitat loss and degradation also threaten the species, and it is considered to be one of the most seized species of tortoise or freshwater turtle worldwide. The proposal aims to strengthen international cooperation and enforcement to protect the species.
